Lock and unlock a record

Lock a lead, contact, account or deal so nobody changes or deletes it by mistake, and unlock it again.

Updated 10 October 2026 · 2 min read

Locking a record stops anyone from changing or deleting it by mistake. Your team can still add comments, files and activities to it.

For example, you agree the price of a big order with a customer. You lock the deal, so nobody changes the price by accident. Your team can still add notes and tasks while the order goes through.

You can lock leads, contacts, accounts and deals.

Before you start

  • To lock a record, you need its edit permission, such as Edit Leads. You must also be the record's owner, or the person who created it.
  • To unlock a record, you must be the person who locked it, and still be its owner or the person who created it.

If you don't have a permission you need, ask your admin.

Lock a record

  1. Open the record, or find it in the list.
  2. Click ⋮, then Lock, and confirm.

A lock shows next to the record's name. To see who locked it, point at the lock.

A converted lead can't be locked.

What a lock stops

While a record is locked, nobody can:

  • edit it,
  • change its status or stage,
  • delete it,
  • convert it, if it's a lead.

People can still add comments, files, tasks, meetings and calls.

Unlock a record

Click ⋮, then Unlock, and confirm. Only the person who locked the record can unlock it.
